About Kevin Short
American bass-baritone Kevin Short has been active in the operatic field, perhaps most notably for creating the role of Joseph in John Corigliano's The Ghosts of Versailles. Short attended Morgan State University, the Curtis Institute, and the Juilliard School, and in 1989 he won the bass-baritone award in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. From 1991 to 1998, he gave 129 performances at the Metropolitan Opera, which included roles in La bohème, Don Carlo, La fanciulla del West, Dialogues des Carmélites, Turandot, Don Giovanni, Tosca, Madama Butterfly, and Eugene Onegin; he also performed at the New York City Opera in Les pêcheurs de perles and Lucia di Lammermoor. Short's international performances have included roles in Tannhäuser, Faust, Norma, Die Zauberflöte, L'Incoronazione di Poppea, and Gianni Schicchi for Theatre Basel, and as Leporello in Don Giovanni for Volksoper Wien. Short was a cast member of Michael Dellaira's one-act opera, The Death of Webern, singing the role of Hans Moldenhauer, and the recording was issued in 2016 on Albany. In 2018, Short released a hybrid SACD on Pentatone of arias for operatic villains, Mephistopheles and Other Bad Guys. ~ Blair Sanderson
