Yamada served as principal conductor of the Japan Philharmonic and the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in the 2010s. In 2010, Yamada served as principal guest conductor of the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande from 2012 to 2017. His debut recording came in 2013 with the Czech Philharmonic. He became the principal guest conductor of the Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013, ascended to principal conductor in 2016, and continued to hold that position as of the mid-2020s. Yamada became the principal guest conductor of England's City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 2018, becoming the chief conductor in 2023.
