About John Hines
Despite the fact that he composed a piece of music entitled "Baptismal," this John Hines should not be confused with the Johnny Hines who sang bass in gospel groups such as the Dixieaires and the Reliable Jubilee Singers. "Muse Rapture" also sounds like something that might dribble out of the mouth of a fundamentalist preacher, at least the title. Musically Hines was all about the hard bop style documented on labels such as Blue Note. His "Johnny G.G." is a tribute to tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin, one of the masters of this style of jazz, who recorded it in a version described as both "long" and "loping" by erstwhile critics. ~ Eugene Chadbourne
