About James Alexander Bright

James Alexander Bright's home-recorded indie electronic productions blend dreamy, lo-fi psychedelic pop and smooth soul grooves. Textured percussion and fragmented electronic and tape effects help define the multi-instrumentalist's distinct sound. He released music under the moniker Hairy Hands in the mid-2010s before presenting his first EP under his own name, Mallorca, in 2018. Two years later, Bright made his full-length solo debut with Headroom. An illustrator based in rural Hampshire, England, Bright began sharing mixes under the alias Hairy Hands around 2013, with the EP Battlecat arriving in early 2015. It included contributions by a number of collaborators on instruments such as live drums, synths, and horns. In the meantime, his work for other artists included playing guitar on that's year's Tropics album, Rapture. Another collaborative album, the Hairy Hands' full-length Magic, followed on Tape Club and New Los in 2016. Pulling back from collaboration, Bright worked on equipment including samplers, effect pedals, and a tape deck in addition to his laptop to piece together his first release under his own name, July 2018's Mallorca EP. It was recorded almost entirely solo, though friends sent him basslines and saxophone parts. That October, he followed up with another EP, the similarly conceived Strange Folk. In March 2019, Bright made his debut for !K7 Music with the song "Tigers Roar" b/w "The Panther." It incorporated field recordings of birds and a nearby river. Later in the year, his song "Friends (Lovers Lost)" appeared on the compilation FOF10: Friends of Friends at 10. Drawing on influences including '60s sunshine pop, disco, and nature, his solo debut album, Headroom, arrived on !K7 in April 2020. ~ Marcy Donelson
