Essential Albums
- Recorded in 1981 while he was still part of Weather Report, bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius' ambitious and richly detailed second solo album sounds like a minor masterpiece today. Harmonica and steel drums often bubble to the forefront as he inventively overhauls Bach ("Chromatic Fantasy"), The Beatles ("Blackbird"), and even Weather Report's "Birdland" ("Liberty City"). Bandmates including saxophonist Wayne Shorter and drummer Peter Erskine helped Pastorius radically extend jazz-fusion's potential into the big-band realm. Overachievement has rarely sounded as fun.

About Jaco Pastorius
In his brief, blazing career, Jaco Pastorius proved he could do almost everything -- except handle the fame that his talent brought him. His stunning 1976 debut album put the electric bass in an entirely new light, and soon he became a superstar as a member of jazz supergroup Weather Report. He then left the group to lead his own band, in which Jaco's powerful groove and relentless flair brought together jazz, soul, calypso, Latin, rock, and other sounds. A tragic downward spiral led to his death in 1987, but he will long be remembered as a soloist, composer, accompanist, and outrageous showman without equal.
