About .gif

After finding a niche following for their music with debut EP Saudade in 2013, .gif quickly established critical acclaim on the local Singaporean indie scene thanks to their unique and unconventional sound. Dark, immersive and often experimental, the duo comprising Weish and Din borrow influences from across the spectrum of artistic disciplines (theatre, film and literature) with impressive fluidity and deftness. Going from strength to strength, their first full-length album Soma in 2015 continued to flesh out the murky longing and despair established on their debut EP with searching trip-hop and synth-pop combinations. The band switched gears on their 2020 album Hail Nothing, continuing to reprise their mysterious, versatile sound—but this time attacking it from a relatively more optimistic perspective. Adding post-punk and slow-driving techno to their mix of genres, the duo tackle the exhilarating freedom of attaching meaning to nothing, and embracing everything in spite of it. A breath of fresh air on the Southeast Asian music scene, .gif have established a place for themselves as resident dark horses who flit between genres and disciplines to create art outside the boundaries—while connecting cultures and audiences over a mutually shared feeling of existential dread.
