Georg Rhau

About Georg Rhau

As an active publisher in Wittenberg during the years of the Reformation, Rhau was not only associated with the young theologians but he was also familiar with the new music that was being written for the services of the church including Ordinaries, Propers and music for special festivals of the church. Rhau was responsible for the publication of collections of the liturgical texts prior to the Reformation, during and into the latter days of the movement. Works from Josquin and Obrecht as well as the compositions of the younger generation were included in his collections. His works were qualitatively sound in musical accuracy and are also important for their preservation of these early contributions to the Lutheran church. Rhau not only published music but was instrumental in the publication of Luther's Catechism, the Augsburg Confession, Luther's Sermons and the Bible translated by Luther, Melancthon and Bugenhagen. Interestingly, Rhau was also a talented musician as can be discerned from his appointment as the Kantor of the Thomasschule. ~ Keith Johnson
