About Flor de Toloache

Mariachi Flor de Toloache (aka Flor de Toloache) are an award-winning, all-female mariachi group from New York City. Founded in 2008, the group is led by singers Mireya I. Ramos and Shae Fiol. In keeping with the mariachi tradition, the group was originally a trio whose instrumentation included harp, violin, and vihuela. They eventually grew into a quartet, then a septet, and eventually a ten-piece orchestra, but can -- and do -- perform in any configuration that suits a particular environment. They sing in Spanish and English. The group's members reflect diverse cultural and geographical backgrounds -- they come from Mexico, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, Australia, Colombia, Germany, Italy, and the United States. Their music is a versatile, modern, yet timeless take on traditional Mexican music that includes not only ranchera but cumbia, Latin jazz, and even "mariachi rock" -- they perform a mean cover of Nirvana's "Come as You Are" live. Mariachi Flor de Toloache initially established themselves as a live act in the clubs of New York City. Given their unique approach to Mexican music they were welcomed in a wide variety of venues. They issued a self-released, eponymously titled debut album in January of 2015 and took to the road promoting it. Already known to other musicians, they were able to secure opening slots on tours including Dan Auerbach's the Arcs. After performances to sold-out audiences in India, the U.K., Germany, Holland, Italy, and France, they continued to captivate crowds in the U.S., including those at First Avenue in Minneapolis, The Vic in Chicago, Terminal 5 in New York, D.C.'s 9:30 Club, and Nashville’s Ryman Theater (The Grand Ole Opry). The group's debut album received a Latin Grammy nomination for Best Ranchera Album of 2015. Following a highly praised NPR Tiny Desk Concert and a further collaboration with the Arcs, the group appeared on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and BBC 2's Later with Jools Holland. In 2016, Mariachi Flor de Toloache signed to the Daptone-distributed Chulo Records run by Los Hacheros' Jacob Plasse (who was instrumental in fomenting their collaboration with the Arcs). While recording their sophomore album, the group also worked on records by Chicano Batman, Snarky Puppy guitarist Chris McQueen, and Luba Mason. They also filmed three videos for Fania as well as a Kate Spade commercial. Their second album, Las Caras Lindas, included mariachi standards, a Juan Gabriel tribute medley, and six original songs. It was released in May of 2017. While the album peaked at number 31 on the Top Latin Albums chart, it took home the Latin Grammy that year for Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album. ~ Thom Jurek
