About Emani Shankara Sastry
Emani Shankara Sastry (1922-1987) was a well-established vina player whose reputation extended to Europe and North America. One of his most prominent works abroad appeared in CBS (France)'s Musiques & Traditions du Monde series in 1975 under the title Inde Du Sud -- L'Art Du Vina (CBS 80213), on which he was accompanied on mridangam by Madras A. Kannan. He broadcast widely on All India Radio from the 1940s. In 1959 he joined the Delhi staff of that organization after a period of working as music director at Emini Studios. Much of his subsequent life was spent in radio and television but that is not to downplay his work as a vina player and teacher. Chitti Babu, for example, studied with him. His work also appears on the Playasound label. ~ Ken Hunt
