About David Pohle

As a German instrumentalist, Pohle received training from Schutz in Dresden and then worked in various places including the courts of Dresden, Merseburg, Wissenfels and Zeitz settling in Halle first as Konzertmeister and then as Kapellmeister. Most of Pohle's music was not published and has subsequently been lost. He wrote Singspiels and sacred concertos as well as arias to strophic poems. The extant vocal works by Pohle are all sacred set to Latin texts. He also composed cantatas for the complete church year using a biblical text and a strophic poem. Melodies were set in the cantabile style with full harmonies and instrumental arrangements that favored instruments of middle and lower registrations resulting in dark and somber textures. ~ Keith Johnson
