About Cockney Rebel

Formed in 1973 by the ex-journalist Steve Harley, Cockney Rebel looked like early Roxy Music and sounded like David Bowie. Their debut hit "Judy Teen" brought them attention, so they switched-up line-ups completely and scored a U.K. #1 in 1975 with the sparkling "Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)," now billed as Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. Harley would ultimately discard the Cockney Rebel tag for several unsuccessful solo releases before returning to the U.K. charts in 1986, duetting with Sarah Brightman on the title song from PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. Harley returned to the Cockney Rebel well in 1992, bringing "Make Me Smile (Come Up And See Me)" back to the charts and continued to tour regularly into the 00s, but only recording occasionally.
