The versatile British combo Byzantium made a run at mainstream success in the front half of the 1970s, releasing a trio of eclectic albums that endeared them to critics, but befuddled both the masses and the band's record label. In retrospect, the group's blend of psychedelia, progressive rock, country-rock, and West Coast pop perhaps predestined the cult status that time eventually bestowed upon them. After being dropped by A&M in 1973, the band persevered independently to privately record their extremely rare and highly rated third LP before finally calling it quits two years later. Unjustly ignored during their time and largely unsung in decades hence, Byzantium were honored by archival label Grapefruit Records in 2021 with a lavish box set compiling their entire catalog and plenty of extras.
