About Barbara Laronga

b. Sherborn, Massachusetts, USA. Taking up the trumpet as a child, Laronga studied extensively, including graduating from the Manhattan School of Music with a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance, and from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell, with a Bachelor’s degree in Trumpet Performance and Music Business. Laronga has also has studied privately with teachers such as Lew Soloff and Byron Stripling. She has played with artists from the jazz and pop worlds including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Buddy DeFranco, Eliane Elias, Connie Francis, Aretha Franklin, Johnny Mathis, Hilton Ruiz and Mark Wahlberg. She also appears on Sketches Of Spain, recorded by Dave Liebman with the Manhattan School Of Music Jazz Orchestra. A member of the DIVA big band, with which she is a featured soloist, Laronga has played numerous concerts and appeared on record. She also plays in the DIVA spin-off quintet, Five Play, appearing with the latter on Marlene VerPlanck’s 2003 recording It’s How You Play The Game. A sound section player, Laronga is also a sparkling soloist with fresh ideas and a superb technique. Although most of her playing is contemporary in style, Laronga also plays in a more traditional style with her own band, the Bayou Bump. In addition to performing, Laronga is also an in-demand teacher both privately and at The United Nations International School in New York and The New York Pops ‘Salute To Music’ programme.
