About Anne Lenner

b. Ann Green, 24 December 1912, Aylestone, Leicester, England, d. 4 June 1997, England. A popular singer with several British dance bands in the 30s and early 40s, Lenner made more than 100 recordings, almost all of them with Carroll Gibbons And His Savoy Orpheans. Born into a theatrical family, Ann first performed with her sister as the Lenner Sisters, adopting the stage surname of her parents. She was signed up by Gibbons in 1934 to front his band, much to the chagrin of the management of the Savoy Hotel who took a dim view of a resident female singer. She made a brief and uncredited appearance in the 1940 movie, Garrison Follies, and during the war appeared regularly on the BBC series Composer Serenade. After the war she appeared with Frank Weir’s Astor Club Seven, Maurice Winnick’s Ciro Club Band, Jay Wilbur and Joe Loss, before taking up an offer of employment in the overseas branch of the Civil Service. Lenner’s voice was smooth and she approached songs such as ‘There’s A Lull In My Life’, ‘Begin The Beguine’, ‘Scatterbrain’, ‘My Man’, and other popular songs of the day with elegance and charm.
