About Andre Williams
Like many R&B artists, Andre Williams began his career singing in the church, which led to street corner vocal groups. By the early 1950s, Williams had recorded several singles with the Don Juans for Fortune Records in Detroit. He subsequently launched a solo career on Fortune, with two jokey records, "Jail Bait" and "Bacon Fat" in '57. By the early '60s, Williams was working as a producer and songwriter for various labels, including Chess and Motown, where he worked with Mary Wells, Stevie Wonder, and Eddie Holland. Among other R&B chestnuts, he co-wrote and produced "Shake A Tail Feather" for the Five Duotones and "Twine Time" for Alvin Cash. After struggling with various addictions and homelessness, he made a successful comeback in the '90s, with a grittier, garage-rock sound. In his 70s, he continues to hone his eccentric blend of R&B and punk.
