Soulful

Soulful

One of an entire generation of talented New Orleans vocalists who recorded sides with the legendary producer, arranger and songwriter Allen Toussaint, Willie Harper lent his powerful voice to countless Toussaint helmed sessions throughout the ‘60s, but the handful of sides that featured Harper as lead vocalist never received more than local attention despite their considerable quality. Between 1960 and 1968 Harper was featured on a dozen sides released on Toussaint’s Sansu and Alon labels. Sadly, this collection includes only a portion of this incredible body of work. “Here Comes The Hurt” and “I Don’t Need You Anymore” feature some of New Orleans’ finest session musicians and are quite easily the equal of the very best music produced in New Orleans in the mid-‘60s, which means that they are very good indeed. This slim set is rounded out by seven selections from later in Harper’s career. These later sides are universally excellent, but fans of the golden age of New Orleans soul will want this collection for its inclusion of those two phenomenal Toussaint productions.
