What Kind of Love

What Kind of Love

Margaret Becker began her Christian music career in the mid-1980s as a rock belter in the Ann Wilson/Pat Benatar mode. Over the following decade, she moved away from her earlier stridency in favor of a subtler, R&B-influence sound, and What Kind Of Love (1999) shows what a little refinement can do for an artist of Becker’s natural gifts. Beyond her growth as a vocalist, Becker shows greater command as a songwriter here as well. She isn’t afraid to ask questions about the nature of faith or to search for God’s presence in ordinary events. Mood-enhancing strings add texture to the title track, while “Worlds Apart” harkens back to the rock edge of her ‘80s work. The standout track is “Hope In A Hopeless World,” a plea for the less-fortunate set to a simmering hip-hop groove. Rather than preach, What Kind Of Love takes a Christian perspective to comment on the human condition with warmth and empathy.
