Wanna Do the Wild Plastic Brane Love Thing?

Wanna Do the Wild Plastic Brane Love Thing?

Compiled from hard-to-find releases on Italian and British labels, The Stabilisers’ U.S. debut comprises choice tracks from two previous LPs (one of which carries the same title as this collection, issued on Acid Jazz Records in 2006) and one EP.  Wicked Cool Records (run by guitarist/actor Little Steven Van Zandt) is home base largely to bands rooted in 1960s garage sensibilities, and The Stabilisers — with a pedigree that includes Billy Childish, the Prisoners, and the James Taylor Quartet  —  more than fit in; they may, in fact, rule the Wicked Cool roost.  A retro, garage-rock spirit clearly drives tracks like the brilliant, catchy opener, “Wanna,” the high-energy “She’s a Goth,” and the frantic, fun, “Love is Easy in the Summertime,” while a late ‘70s punk/new wave flavor seasons the mix further on tracks like “Queen of the Scene,” “Do the Brane,” and “Problem Child.” “The Way She Is” and “Belinda” proudly reflect an appreciation for straightforward rock (think late-night fun in a beer-drenched pub), and “Born to Kiss Arse” lets one imagine, for a moment, the Beatles doing a true punk rave-up. The band is having so much fun, there’s no way the listener can avoid jumping in too, all air-guitar and pogo moves.
