On her fourth solo album, the veteran songwriter—who co-wrote hits like Rihanna and Eminem’s “Love the Way You Lie” and Diddy’s “Coming Home”—reflects the gloomy, introspective alt-pop she listened to growing up (think: Dido, Fiona Apple, The Cranberries). The songs ride an emotional rollercoaster with plenty more downs than ups, but it makes Grey’s husky soprano sound mysterious, romantic, and serene. “Partly Cloudy With a Chance of Tears” has all the faraway dreaminess of early-aughts Imogen Heap, and the sad but sexy “Show Me Where It Hurts” recalls Zero 7’s unforgettable 2001 hit “Destiny.”
