This album finds Clarke having a ball touching on several different points in his storied career. He comes out of the gate popping and plucking on the funky opener, “Pop Virgil.” He then goes into fusion overdrive for “Last Train to Sanity” and “Gotham City.” The bassist heads down to Brazil with some smooth funk and samba on George Duke’s “Brazilian Love Affair.” He trots out three more versions of his “Bass Folk Song” solo bass vehicles and revisits the title track (“School Days”) from his classic 1976 album. Through all the ups and downs, Clarke’s bass is the urgent pulsing heartbeat to these tunes, keeping things moving and grooving to the end.
