Above the Rim (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) [Deluxe Edition]

Released in 1994, at the height of the G-funk era, this Dr. Dre-curated soundtrack was unleashed by the infamous Death Row label, and features jams from nearly all of the stars on the roster. Most notable for Warren G and Nate Dogg's breakout single "Regulate," it also sports bangers from The Lady of Rage (the Dre-produced "Afro Puffs"), Tha Dogg Pound ("Big Pimpin'," "Dogg Pound 4 Life" with Snoop), and a gang of new jack/R&B artists such as Aaron Hall, SWV, H-Town, and even Al B. Sure! Surprisingly, 2Pac, the star of the movie, appears only on one track, "Pour Out a Little Liquor," though fan favorites "Pain" and "Loyal to the Game" were included on the original cassette release back in the day. Though definitely not a timeless classic à la The Chronic or Doggystyle, it's still a solid collection of Cali-centric tunes, a nice time-warp for heads wistful for the lowriders and 40 drinking of their youth.
