To soundtrack the Apple Original comedy Trying, its composers took a novel approach. The team—Elbow’s Guy Garvey, I Am Kloot bassist Peter Jobson, and established composer Paul Saunderson—took their incidental music from each episode and crafted original songs from there. The results stay true to the show: bittersweet and gently stirring. Much of the magic arrives with Garvey on vocal responsibilities. “Follow You” is hypnotic, “Don’t Give Up on Me” utilizes Garvey’s weary charm for a some nicely wonky blues, and “Where Are You” might be slight, but it’s gorgeous. The true standout moment, however, arrives when isaac gracie and Chilli Chilton combine for “Don’t Look Down.” It’s the sort of life-affirming, heart-racing moment perfect for a show full of them.
