Trogg Modal, Vol. 1

Trogg Modal, Vol. 1

Eric Copeland’s solo work is more controlled than the noise assault of his group Black Dice, but only just: His machine-beats limp and lurch, and his synths are as sticky as a leaky garbage bag. Much like 2017’s Goofballs, Trogg Modal, Vol. 1 reimagines techno from the perspective of an amateur inventor or mad scientist. “Build-A-Brain” unpacks broken-down synth arpeggios over no-fi drum programming, while “Fresco” starts off sounding like Mr. Oizo’s squelchy “Flat Beat” but steadily piles on keys and samples until the track sags under its own weight. Messy but invigorating, “Mateo” plays hiccuping vocal snippets off a hardscrabble machine groove. And the New Wave-flavored “321 Contact” references both the “Sleng Teng” riddim and The Monkees’ “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” floating something like a unified theory of gonzo pop.
