To Roy

To Roy

To Roy is a tribute to the late free jazz trumpeter Roy Campbell, and it marks the first collaboration of saxophonist Oliver Lake and bassist William Parker. (Parker worked with Campbell in groups such as Pyramid Trio and Other Dimensions in Music.) Parker’s “Variation on a Theme of Marvin Gaye” is an appropriate opener; Campbell started out playing hard bop and was no stranger to R&B. On Lake’s “Check,” the saxophonist burns it up and Parker’s exciting solo includes both round, warm tones and a flurry of prickly notes. The title track is excellent, a beautiful blend of independence and togetherness.
