Sam Avant and Simon Blitzer know how to set a mood. The Calgary duo, known as Beach Season, make sultry electro-R&B that is, in a word, forward. “I can take the heat if you can take the pressure,” they whisper on “Best Behaviour,” a brooding, late-night lullaby that spits so much game, it makes us blush. On Time & Place, the pair’s third EP, they use all the signature ingredients—sensual cymbals, pitter-pattering snares, bump-and-grind bass, and flickers of Auto-Tune—but layer them together in unexpected ways. On “Talk,” a song that toggles between wanting to talk and wanting to, well, you know, they use synths, drums, and electric guitar to say all the things they can’t.
