In fine Built to Spill form, There Is No Enemy explodes off the bat with loose, hooky, and loud guitar, with “Aisle 13” unhinging Doug Martsch from the get-go. “Hindsight” shows off their well-honed hazy side with a near-folky rock ‘n’ roll vibe that switches deftly from sweet and bouncy to heavy melancholy. “Pat” picks up some punk-rock ferociousness in the middle, while the dark restlessness of “Things Fall Apart” builds to a wild, psychedelic instrumental that’s fantastically heavy on trumpet.
