The Opposite of Time

The Opposite of Time

Time is often money on this occasional music journalist's immaculately arranged second album. Brian Cullman unaffectedly translates his pop-rock smarts into a coolly dire post-recession account of what happens "when the old magic's lost and the new magic's broken." Steel guitar flourishes and Jenni Muldaur's backing vocals add depth and resonance to Cullman's subtly understated melodies, while highlights abound in the jangly raver "And She Said," the heartbreaking Hank Williams rewrite "Tender Wheels," and the Eno-esque closing benediction, "Unspoiled."
