The New Rose Years harvests an impressive 30 songs by the Boston punk/power pop heroes The Real Kids from their tenure on the French label New Rose. The first nine songs hail from Outta Place, starting with “Can’t Talk to That Girl.” That track perfectly exemplifies frontman John Felice’s penchant for '50s rock ‘n’ roll with meaty punk chops played with a libidinous garage band attack. A live cover of Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels’ “I’d Rather Go to Jail” is another standout from this era, revealing the band’s affinity for the kinds of classic teenage delinquent imagery immortalized by Karlheinz Weinberger’s photographs. Songs 10 through 20 were culled from All Kindsa Jerks Live. They cast a light on the band’s prowess in concert, especially with the fan favorite “My Baby’s Book,” where the backing vocals are as powerful as Felice’s lead. The last 10 songs were pulled from 1983’s Hit You Hard. They better illustrate Felice’s fascination with teenage relationships as narrated in '50s rock songs, most noticeably on the catchy “She.”
