The Just-Ice and Krs-One EP, Vol. 1 - EP

They say that rap music is a young man's game, but apparently these guys never got the memo. Just-Ice and KRS-One both started putting out records in the mid-'80s, and both of their debut albums became bona fide classics: Back to the Old School and Criminal Minded, respectively. With more than 25 years in the game—each—they're definitely elder statesmen, but perhaps more shockingly, they're still putting out good music on a regular basis. On this five-track EP, they show any skeptics that they've still got what it takes to go up against today's skinny jeans–rocking new jacks. Each song here is nasty, with quality production (from duo Global Grooves) backing up bold and insightful rhymes that touch on everything from immigration and bird flu ("Politricks") to Hurricane Katrina, Y2K, and pagers (the sax-laced, ragga-flavored "Memories"). Commercial radio is dissected on "Blah, Blah, Blah," while "Freestyle" is an explosive banger that sounds straight out of 1988. Young whippersnappers take note: this right here is real hip-hop.
