Indie rock disciples will always champion the late, great Bill Doss for his innovative work with The Elephant 6 recording collective and his band The Olivia Tremor Control. After all, he’s influenced Animal Collective, Arcade Fire, and The Shins. But Doss’s side project The Sunshine Fix deserves equal recognition and praise. Though less experimental than tracks by The Olivia Tremor Control, the songs on 2000’s The Future History of a Sunshine Fix EP are still steeped deep in adoration for all things ‘60s psychedelic, starting with the opening “Sound's Around You (Oh No It Isn't! Cried The Little Lord Funk Leroy).” Using vintage instruments and antiquated analog recording gear, this track plays with such period-correct authenticity that it'd be easy to mistake it as an outtake from any of those English freakbeat compilations reissued by Bam-Caruso. “The Many Keys to Reunion” follows with hints of the Elephant 6 gang’s love for manipulating vintage studio effects before bandmate Seth Hall’s country-rock leanings get "Last Night I Had a Dream (Said I Had a Dream Last Night)" sounding delightfully weird and twangy.
