The Death of a Girl - EP

The San Francisco band Vue released this 1999 EP shortly after changing its name from The Audience (as a Britpop band with the same name had already put out some recordings). But the group was also embarking on a change in sound. Losing the vestiges of its experimental hardcore roots, it embraced a trendier garage-rock sound that was handsomely trimmed in angular post-punk trappings. The opening “Child for You” grooves on a loose and bluesy foundation like a cross between Jonathan Fire*Eater and The Make-Up, with more rootsy riffs and accessible melodies. The riveting wall-of-sound guitar solo also hints at what frontman Rex Shelverton would bring to the music of Tamaryn in the second decade of the 21st century. “Hush Your Head” has a familiar Iggy Pop–inspired bounce that’s contrasted by Shelverton’s seemingly stream-of-conscience vocal performance, which coolly rubs against the rhythm’s grain. In the drowsy title track, the guitars flutter and strobe with trashy aplomb, providing a droning dirge for Shelverton to wail over while sounding like a son of Jon Spencer and Cristina Martinez.
