Straight outta greater London (Hersham), and first produced by The Velvet Underground’s John Cale, Sham 69 managed a great run of U.K. chart hits from 1977 to 1979. Though the band’s skinhead following rose in direct proportion to the popularity of singer Jimmy Pursey’s proletariat rebel-rousing, Sham 69 were unfortunately saddled with a legion of followers who misinterpreted their anti-racist views as white-pride politics. But none of that should interfere with the enjoyment of Sham’s boffo mix of power riffs and shout-outs, especially on the infectious punk classics “Family Life,” “If the Kids Are United,” “Hersham Boys,” and “Borstal Breakout” (which The Replacements covered in their 2013 reunion shows.) Listen closely and hear how Pursey was, at times, a kind of young-punk Ray Davies, detailing the working-class life where he grew up in the late ’70s. This budget-priced set collects the band’s run of historic punk: their four Polygram albums, (Tell Us the Truth, That’s Life, The Adventures of Hersham Boys, and The Game) and their 1988 “comeback” (Volunteer).
