In time for Valentine’s Day, London DJ AAA takes control of February 2024’s mix with a set of slow jams pulled from various styles and genres. “My go-to slow-jam track from the mix would have to be [Cleo Sol’s] ‘Know That You Are Loved’ remix by Maestro & Supa D,” he tells Apple Music. “Not a traditional slow jam but in the R&B spectrum, and a song that champions positive affirmation.” Alongside that track, you’ll hear some late-’90s and early-2000s classics from Sisqó and Kirk Franklin, alongside plenty of silken, contemporary cuts by the likes of Summer Walker, Brent Faiyaz, Drake, and Nines—all songs that you might hear at SLOWJAMSwithA nights in London. If slow-jam territory was once very much the end of the night, events like SJWA are changing that. “For us at SJWA it’s all night,” he says. “That is the crux of the concept and it ranges to all styles of slow genres. The rise of slow-jam events is amazing, I think it’s clear people are yearning for other experiences and community outside of what they usually hear and it’s great because they’re actively engaged. I think, all too often, we spend a huge amount of time paying attention to the past and forget to acknowledge the present.”
