Synth Expressionism/Rhythmic Cubism

Synth Expressionism/Rhythmic Cubism

Chicago’s Jamal Moss, better known as Hieroglyphic Being, has one foot in the dance music world and another in the most uncompromising corner of the avant-garde: His productions are unmistakably descended from classic Midwestern house and techno, yet as a DJ, he occasionally lets records run intentionally out of sync, proudly forsaking traditional beat-matching in favor of provocative rhythmic chaos. His mini-LP Synth Expressionism/Rhythmic Cubism captures the full sweep of his counterintuitive take on machine music. It’s right there in the title, with its suggestion of free-form gestures and shapes that defy club music convention. On some tracks, his drum programming harks back to Chicago house at its most essential, full of propulsive kicks and whip-cracking snares; “Apocrypha,” on the other hand, rides a double-time groove that stretches the limits of footwork, while “Rhythmic Cubism” plays dazzling tricks with meter and “The Redemption Project” tips into the realm of free jazz, right down to a questing organ solo and percussive bursts that obliterate the rhythmic grid. As far out as he can travel, Moss makes tunes that can be surprisingly meditative: It’s music for solo space flight, where time plays tricks on the mind.
