Each member of LEISURE boasts a lengthy track record in New Zealand music—including BENEE producer Josh Fountain—but they pool their talents in this romance-minded Auckland collective. Sharing vocal and instrumental duties, the five players craft mellow electro-funk that’s all about smooth exchanges between bass, synth, and other elements alongside pleasantly floaty vocal turns. LEISURE’s third album is a communal affair, with different members stepping up to sing equally sensitive love songs. “Slipping Away” is a reggae-tinged ode to love’s transportive power, while “Spark It Up” doubles down on intimate falsetto. Other songs are at once airy and jammy, evoking funk and soul classics as well as more recent indie acts like Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Chromeo.
