At the heart of the best Nordic TV dramas, such as The Killing and The Bridge, lies brooding music designed to help create their unsettling worlds. On this gripping recording, violinist Mari Samuelsen has commissioned short orchestral pieces from composers of these dramas’ soundtracks, including Frans Bak (The Killing) and Ólafur Arnalds (Broadchurch, regarded as something of a British-Nordic noir). The result is a hypnotic portrait of bleak, misty landscapes that lingers long after the final track—Arnalds’ haunting “Words of Amber”—has ebbed away.
