The Speedies were such perfectionists at crafting their airtight style of NYC power pop that it’s no wonder some of the band’s members later became luminaries in their own right. Drummer Allen Hurkin-Torres is now a New York State Supreme Court judge, lead guitarist Eric Hoffert co-created QuickTime, and rhythm guitarist Gregory Crewdson is a Yale professor and internationally lauded art photographer. But back in 1979 as The Speedies, they sold out shows, threw sugary cereal at their audience (mostly teen girls), and recorded flawless guitar pop like “Let Me Take Your Photo,” a tune so catchy that it’s pretty easy to forgive singer John Marino for affecting a British accent. Speedy Delivery brims with an all-killer-no-filler selection of the band’s best songs. So it’s easy to let the cheesy electro remix of “Let Me Take Your Photo” slide—especially when the opening “You Need Pop” sets the tone with angsty riffs, rhythmic handclaps, British Invasion guitar tones, and infectious melodies. The standout cut “Math Teacher” flirts with new wave.
