The Second Album + the First Rehearsal Tapes

The Second Album + the First Rehearsal Tapes

None other than Bruce Springsteen found a spiritual connection to this synth-punk duo's music, covering "Dream Baby Dream" and citing "Frankie Teardrop" as an inspiration for Nebraska's "State Trooper." Though Suicide's legend says the duo was confrontational and hated in its heyday, much of its music has proven innovative and even accessible to modern ears. This second album, produced by The Cars' Ric Ocasek, is surprisingly commercial-sounding, capturing a band that could write heartfelt love songs in its unique way. "Sweetheart" purrs with a sweet sound, while "Fast Money Music" takes the debut album's ominous vibe and combines it with a skewed melodicism that's sensual and inviting. This issue includes "Dream Baby Dream" and two other bonus cuts, along with 1975 rehearsal tapes that showcase the group's aggressive and abrasive beginnings (and are admittedly tough on the ears in spots). There's a peculiar sense of beauty here, and if one spends time with these sounds, Suicide's songs do over time create a wondrous logic of their own.
