Doin' My Thing

Doin' My Thing

From the opening bars of “Rain Is a Good Thing” it’s evident that Bryan isn’t just your run-of-the-mill country hunk — he’s a real Southern boy through and through. With an authentic Georgian accent he croons about how rain makes corn, which makes whiskey, which makes his girlfriend feel a little frisky — if the small-town charm emanating from Bryan’s second album sounded any more endearing, he’d be John Mellencamp (a good thing). The title track borrows from equal parts ‘70s country rockers and ‘90s new- traditional hat acts, but it’s his smash hit ballad “Do I” where Bryan’s throaty drawl serves him best, especially when he’s being accompanied by cascading layers of backing female vocal harmonies on the chorus. Amazingly, Bryan takes the novelty out of his novel approach to covering OneRepublic’s “Apologize,” turning the sweeping, melodramatic original into a mature serenade. By closing with the rootsy “Drinkin’ Beer and Wastin’ Bullets,” Bryan upgrades that good ol’ boy charm found on the best moments of his 2007 debut, I'll Stay Me.
