If it weren’t for singer Justin Ringle’s soft, signature vocals, the sunny, major-key ramble of “Violently Wild” might trick you into thinking this isn’t a Horse Feathers album. But on their fifth, they continue to develop a broader sound. The driving indie folk of “Old Media” reveals Ringle barely bridled with rousing arrangements. Likewise, “Dead End Thanks” rambles through reverb-soaked piano and stirring strings to uplifting results. Even the initially somber “Why Do I Try” emerges from darkness into bouncy keys and sparkling escalations.
