Following up his 2019 EP BLISS, which yielded the quadruple-platinum hit “Waiting,” Victorian multi-hyphenate KIAN reflects on life at the onset of his twenties across SHINE. This second EP offers an up-to-the-minute cross-section of KIAN’s various facets, from singer and songwriter to rapper and producer. His silky introspection is still very much on display, but it receives a bright, club-ready polish on the opening title track, co-penned and co-produced with Willie Tafa (Onefour, Ariana Grande). Despite its upbeat vibe, the project is a lyrically nuanced tribute to the challenges and rewards of personal growth. Romance seeps through the airy vocal layers and sultry guitars of “Close,” while the playful centerpiece “Come Through” features vocalists rako, goyo, and DALI HART from Korean Australian collective 1300. Delicate strands of acoustic guitar mark “Fit In Here,” a sweetly poppy reminder to be yourself rather than conform. These seven songs weave between indie pop, R&B, and other stylistic sweet spots, confirming KIAN’s versatility right alongside his nimble falsetto.
