Live At Massey Hall showcases Neil Young in the early ‘70s, when he already had a big stash of great tunes and wasn’t afraid to experiment with their arrangements. He strips down Crazy Horse guitar jams “Cowgirl In the Sand” and “Down By the River” to skeletal picking and his high, lonesome cry, and this unique balance of intimacy and boldness extends to a version of CSNY’s howling protest anthem “Ohio,” which is slow and deeply mournful like a funeral hymn.
