Your introduction to BabyDrill may have come in 2023 with “Slight Dub,” his grim collab with Young Nudy and 21 Savage, or through his blustery guest verse on Latto’s “Issa Party.” Prior to his big break, the Atlanta rapper was busy experiencing a lifetime’s worth of turbulence before age 22, having attended boot camp as a teenager after an armed robbery charge, gone to trial on RICO charges similar to YSL’s, and become a welder before trying his hand at rap. His commanding voice stands out in Atlanta’s ever-saturated trap landscape as he steamrolls through ScoreGod, the follow-up to 2023’s MadMan, like an eerily calm bull in a china shop. It’s rife with his signature minor-key barnstormers that channel early-2010s Brick Squad and early Chicago drill, filtered through the slurry intensity of label boss Young Nudy. Although “Detroit Flow,” on which Drill dabbles masterfully in Michigan’s slightly askew flow, is a welcome change of pace.
