More than just an ace producer, Ashley Anderson proves himself a masterful selector of talent on his second album as Katalyst. The Sydney artist taps into a diverse international CV that stretches beyond his core work in hip-hop, drawing on a wide slate of guests from across genres on 2007’s What’s Happening. That approach evokes the feeling of a globetrotting highlight reel: English singer/songwriter Joe Volk brings a vulnerable folk lilt to “Loaded Gun,” while a song later, U.S. rapper Diverse glides across the vintage soul vibe of “Dedicated.” Magic Dirt frontwoman Adalita Srsen applies eerie mantras to the foreboding rock grind of the closing “Bladewalker,” while Beautiful Girls’ Mat McHugh thrives against wonky dub effects on “Over and over.” As the Aussie head of Geoff Barrow’s respected Invada label, Anderson approaches this album similarly to the rap-themed round robin of his later Quakers albums with Barrow—see the thrilling cross-section of razor-sharp MCs Ru C.L, Hau, and Yungun on lead single “All You’ve Got.” He also firms up longstanding creative partnerships here, and vocalist/producer Steve Spacek and soul singer Stephanie McKay would return for Katalyst’s 2011 album, Deep Impressions. Beyond that, his omnivorous approach has only deepened on his many projects since.
