Film-maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s soundtrack for his web series about courtesans who become an integral part of India’s independence movement is as graceful and grand as the period drama itself. As always, Bhansali convenes a range of crisply voiced singers for his strongly etched women characters. They evoke the story’s mid-20th-century setting through semi-classical compositions that are simultaneously playful and poignant. Arabian folk-infused opener “Tilasmi Bahein”, rousing qawwali “Sakal Ban” and fervently patriotic “Azadi” are standouts among a set of subtly crafted tunes.
