Blurring pianos, synth, and bass until the beats resemble a surreal dream, Lushlife colors rap tracks like a painter on Ritualize. “Toynbee Suite,” the album’s centerpiece, is a 10-minute epic featuring a chamber orchestra and Lushlife’s rhymes about the mysterious tile art in his native Philadelphia. The rapper/producer also invites guests like Killer Mike, featured on “This Ecstatic Cult,” to cut through the haze of sounds with his hard-edged raps. But it’s Lushlife’s chimerical melodies and fanciful themes that distinguish this avant-garde hip-hop suite.
