The departure of longtime member Marty Willson-Piper rattled The Church’s ardent fanbase, but remaining leader Steve Kilbey picks up the slack the best he knows how with one of The Church’s most ambitious albums to date. Said to have been recorded over eight days in late 2013 with new guitarist Ian Haug (formerly of Powderfinger), Further/Deeper, the band’s 25th album, starts with radio-friendly pop (“Vanishing Man,” “Delirious”) before exploring the deep end of psychedelia with the elaborate-sounding tunes “Laurel Canyon,” “Love Philtre,” and “Globe Spinning.” Melodies dominate as usual, with Kilbey displaying his upper range in key spots.
