Apple Music Home Session: Nina Nesbitt

For Nina Nesbitt, paring back her songs allows her to reveal something new about them. “I think you hear the lyrics in a different way when they’re the main focus,” the Scottish singer-songwriter tells Apple Music. “I wanted to pick two songs from my [2022] album Älskar that I thought sounded really good stripped down to showcase a different side to them.” Here, she reapproaches the album’s upbeat “Pressure Makes Diamonds” and the nostalgic “Teenage Chemistry,” a track about young love that’s given a dreamy update. And while these versions may sound a world away from their finished product, they felt somewhat familiar to Nesbitt. “I always love doing stripped-back versions,” she says. “A lot of my songs start that way when I’m writing them, so I think it showcases them in their purest form when they’re recorded like this.” For her cover, the pop talent takes on Usher’s “Burn.” “I learnt it on tour in 2019 and have wanted a reason to properly record it ever since,” she says. “I think it’s such a heartbreaking song and I guess I wanted to show that with my version. I wanted to make a version that you’d listen to at night on the train home. It’s a very chilled take on the original. I think it really lets you hear the heartbreak behind the words.”
