I Got More Soul!

I Got More Soul!

The Dallas soul veteran Bobby Patterson may be 70 years old upon the release of 2014’s I Got More Soul!, his first studio album in years, but his voice shows none of the wear of his many contemporaries. Recorded in Austin, Texas—with Patterson’s current band leader Zach Ernst, the former Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears guitarist, producing the sessions—I Got More Soul! retains all the flavor of a mid-'60s Stax Records release, from the brass breakouts to the in-the-pocket grooves to the funky guitars and the purring organ. Eight of 10 songs were cowritten between Patterson and members of the band, while the cover of The Dirtbombs’ “Your Love Belongs Under a Rock” is brilliant and on-point, and Sly Stone’s “Poet” is a welcome surprise. Shades of gospel inform “Everybody’s Got a Little Devil in Their Soul,” while songs like the title track, “Let Me Heal It,” and “I Feel the Same Way” could fool plenty into thinking these tracks were culled from vintage tapes in a Memphis vault.
