Summer Number Seventeen

Summer Number Seventeen

Country-pop singer Ronnie Milsap is spending his 70s revisiting the world he remembers with great affection and nostalgia. The title track here pays mind to the summers of one’s youth, when everything is in the planning stages and the whole world seems ripe for the picking. With gentle orchestration and backing vocalists, Milsap sings his way back home with tasteful covers of Bobby Darin’s “Mack the Knife,” Little Anthony & The Imperials’ “Tears on My Pillow,” Lloyd Price’s “Personality,” Hank Williams’ “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still in Love with You”), and Ray Charles’ “Georgia on My Mind.” To cap the trip down memory lane, Milsap has also rerecorded his No. 1 1985 hit “Lost in the Fifties Tonight.” At the time, it was celebrating the music of 30 years prior, with an interpolation of The Five Satins’ doo-wop classic “In the Still of the Night” in its chorus. Milsap has spent much of his career celebrating the songs of previous eras, preferring the sounds of vintage pop, R&B, and country—and here he does what he does best once again.
